Secondary School Active Travel

  • Teenagers cycling

    One hour in class theory

  • Six hours practical training on the bike
  • Certified course

This training will;

  • Encourage and develop safe cycling skills
  • Develop positive attitudes towards road use
  • Increase knowledge and understanding of road and traffic environments and
  • Give trainees the confidence to use their bicycles on local roads

Level 1

Theory session, Classroom based, Introduction to safer cycling, Consists of 5 modules.

  • Module 1: Bicycle Maintenance
  • Module 2: Roadcraft & Rules
  • Module 3: Road Hazards & Cycle Control
  • Module 4: Communications & Road Signs
  • Module 5: Planning a safer cycle route to school

Level 2

Practical session, cycle control skills, delivered in a traffic free environment

  • Simple Bike (M) Check
  • Starting, Stopping
  • Braking
  • Manoeuvring
  • Awareness
  • Signalling
  • Handling & Control

Level 3

An introduction to cycling on the road. (Live road session)

  • Starting / Finishing your journey
  • Road position
  • Awareness
  • Signalling
  • Passing obstacles / side roads
  • Turning into major / minor roads
  • Understanding of safe riding strategy

Level 4

  • Advanced on-road cycle skills
  • All level 3 manoeuvres
  • How to use roundabouts
  • How to use Junctions
  • How to use multi-lane roads
  • Hazard perception & strategy
